Coaching During Covid-19 - Almost a year on from the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, we look at how life in the Gambia has been affected, and how the RTB community have been working together to overcome new challenges.
Over the past five months, the global health pandemic of the coronavirus has affected the entire world, with many countries being locked down and almost every outdoor activity being limited or stopped. The Gambia saw its first case almost one month ago, and despite numbers for the infection still being relatively low when compared with other nations, it became immediately apparent that preventative measures should be taken in order to limit the spread as much as possible. Now that the sun has set on the second day of our December Training Camp we wanted to share more about what our coaches are learning about this week. At the end of the week coaches will host our annual RTB December Festival where all the children will come together to play in a softball tournament. In the days before the festival our coaches will undertake training in one of the four modules of our program. Read more about each module of our program here.
As a new addition to the Run the Bases December Training programme, all in-country coaches are being offered First Aid training From First Aid 4 Gambia. This is taking place before the beginning of the week-long training camp, which will involve many children and members of the local communities.
The biggest highlights of the programme were definitely the final competitions. The first one, played at Kajabang pitch, was created for the children to show off all the softball skills they have learned. Drawing in over 200 people from four different communities (Kartong, Madina Salam, Berending and Gunjur), this tournament saw eight mixed teams play four rounds, a semi-final and a final which eventually saw team Red 2 come out victorious. Prizes were also awarded for Best Communication, Best Leadership and Best Team Player.
Gozo, Malta – In cooperation with the EU Funded Erasmus+ Sport – Small Collaboration project, three participating clubs (King Princ – Croatia, Olympia Haarlem – Netherlands & Redcoats – Malta) met for the first conference in Ghajnsielem to share best practices and introduce the game of softball to over 200 primary school students.
Former UCLA Softball Player Tara Henry (USA), Sebastian Cirillo (Italy), and Kelly Smith (UK), are developing an international organisation that combines skills and values based coaching techniques to empower and encourage young athletes to become leaders in sport and in life.
